I love to walk the beach and look for treasures. Every tide brings new treasures and I can't wait for low tide. Not only do I get to find my treasures, I can smell the sea, feel the sun and wind on my face. It is relaxing and rewarding all in one! I am inspired and my imagination runs wild. I can sit for hours collecting and just enjoying my surroundings.
I usually don't have an idea when I beachcomb or I may have a some idea for a project - then that quickly changes when inspired by my treasures. These oyster shells were being washed by the sea and laying all clean in the sand/rocks on Fish Beach.
I've seen many oyster shells in my life, but this day the shells looked to me of draping victorian dresses. I know some will not see it or will never see it - what are you thinking is usually the response. I continue anyway, I love these new creations and strive to keep my collections in their natural state. I've made many of these, plus smaller clam angels.
I did start making periwinkle angels, then clam and now oyster angels. The oyster shells are quite heavy so I had to come up with a technique so they could be hung without falling. I drilled a pilot hole with my dremel (very thick shells) and proceeded with a electric drill. I then wired their beaded head and charm to the shell. The last step was adding their wings, in which I used raffi - keeping in the spirit of natural - natural look.
This particular angel was inspired by the Monhegan House Gardens - since she/he has a secret. Her secret is a sunflower painted on her back, not that she wasn't beautiful the way she was I wanted to add a little more of me to this creation! So, with the beautiful sunflowers growing in the Monhegan House Garden and these shells on the shore - it made a great fit! Sun, Sand, Sea all in one!
This ornament can be displayed all year round. I will hang my angels in the window so both sides can be seen - beauty on the front/back.
